Alkaline hydrolysis is the scientific name for the process most families know as water cremation or aqua cremation. Behind the calm and gentle language sits a precise, well-studied chemical process, one that has been used in medical and veterinary settings for decades before it became more widely available as a pet aftercare option.

What is alkaline hydrolysis?

Alkaline hydrolysis is a chemical process that uses water, warmth, and a small amount of alkali, usually potassium hydroxide, to break down organic material into its base components. It is, in essence, a controlled and accelerated version of what already happens slowly to any body returned to the earth.

The science explained simply

Inside a stainless steel vessel, the pet's body is gently submerged in a mixture of warm water and a precise quantity of alkali. The vessel is sealed and the process begins. Over the next several hours, the combination of warmth and chemistry breaks down soft tissue into a sterile liquid containing peptides, amino acids, sugars, and salts. What remains is the mineral skeleton, primarily calcium and phosphorus.

What happens to the liquid

The remaining liquid is sterile and contains no DNA. It is treated and returned safely to the local water system in compliance with strict environmental and health regulations. Many providers describe this as the body's water returning to the natural water cycle.

What happens to the bones

The remaining bone matter is gently dried and processed into a soft, fine, light-coloured powder. This is what families receive when their pet's remains are returned. It is mineral, clean, and often described as soft to the touch.

Why families connect with the process

Many families find that, once they understand alkaline hydrolysis, the process feels more natural to them than they expected. There are no flames, no smoke, and no aggressive transformation. Instead, there is warmth, water, and time: three elements that have shaped life on earth for billions of years.

That quiet alignment with nature is one of the reasons aqua cremation has grown so rapidly as a choice for pet aftercare in Australia and around the world.
