How To Support Children Through Pet Loss

For many children, the loss of a pet is their first experience of death. How we guide them through it can shape the way they understand grief for years to come. With honesty, patience, and gentleness, this difficult moment can also become one of connection and learning.

Be honest and clear

Children are often more perceptive than we expect. Using clear, gentle language, explaining that their pet has died and will not be coming back, tends to be kinder than euphemisms like "gone to sleep," which can cause confusion or fear. Honesty, offered with warmth, helps children trust and process what has happened.

Allow their feelings

• Let children express sadness, anger, or confusion without rushing to fix it.
• Reassure them that all their feelings are normal and allowed.
• Share your own feelings gently, showing them that grief is natural.

Include them in remembering

Children often find comfort in being part of a goodbye. They might draw a picture, choose a memorial spot, plant something in the garden, or help select an urn. Being included can give them a sense of agency and closure.

Answering hard questions

Children may ask the same questions many times, or ask about details that surprise us. Answering simply and honestly, at a level they can understand, helps them feel safe. It is perfectly fine to say, "I don't know," when you don't.
